Rensselaer's Municipal Electric Utility is considered a large industry for our community. We strive to keep our rates low, while providing reliable and efficient power.
"Special Ordinance" No. 14 was written and passed on September 17, 1897, authorizing and empowering the City of Rensselaer to construct, maintain and operate an electric light system for the purpose of supplying electricity to the city.
The passing of this ordinance was the beginning of a municipality to serve the inhabitants of the city. Over 100 years later, the Electric Utility consists of three sub departments and an administrative office.
Each of these departments play a vital role with the utility to supply low cost, efficient, reliable power to the utility's customers.
The City of Rensselaer is a full purchasing member of the Indiana Municipal Power Agency "IMPA". IMPA is a statewide agency formed to provide reliable low-cost electricity to municipal electric systems like Rensselaer.
