Electric Department
Rensselaer's Municipal Electric Utility is considered a large industry for our community. We serve as a not-for-profit entity and strive to keep our rates low while providing reliable and efficient power.
A "Special Ordinance" Number 14 was written and passed on September 17, 1897 authorizing and empowering the City of Rensselaer to construct, maintain and operate an electric light system for the purpose of supply electricity to the City.
The passage of this ordinance was the beginning of a municipality to serve the inhabitants of the City. Over 100 years later, the Elecric Utility consists of three sub departments and an administrative office.
Administrative Office: Communication typically is started in this office and relayed onto the applicable department. Comprised of Donna Cochran, Electric Utility Coordinator and Carol Zacek, Administrative Secretary.
Each of these departments play a vital role with the utility to supply low cost, efficient, reliable power to the utility's customers.
The City of Rensselaer is a full purchasing member of the Indiana Municipal Power Agency "IMPA". IMPA is a statewide agency formed to provide reliable low cost electricity to municipal electric systems like Rensselaer.
With the City of Rensselaer being a member of IMPA and by having its own generating capabilities, we can provide our citizens with lower rates and a reliable source of electricity for our customers.
